How to open a bank account in El Salvador

El Salvador uses the US dollar (USD) as its official currency; Bitcoin was legal tender from 2021 but a January 2025 reform tied to an IMF agreement made business acceptance voluntary and requires taxes to be paid in USD. Foreigners can open an account but approval depends on residency and KYC: expect to provide a passport, a Salvadoran tax ID (NIT), proof of address and source-of-funds evidence, with non-residents facing extra compliance checks.
