Countries with no income tax: frequently asked questions
Which countries have no income tax?
The clearest cases are the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman and Saudi Arabia in the Gulf, the Cayman Islands, Bermuda, the Bahamas and the British Virgin Islands in the Caribbean, plus Monaco in Europe and Brunei in Asia. None of them tax personal income.
How do countries with no income tax make money?
They raise revenue in other ways: oil and gas exports, VAT and customs duties, tourism, company registration fees, work-permit charges and, in the islands, financial-services licensing. Taxing individuals is simply not their main source of income.
Can a US citizen live tax-free abroad?
Not entirely. The United States taxes citizens on worldwide income wherever they live, though the Foreign Earned Income Exclusion and foreign tax credits reduce the bill. Moving to a 0% country removes the local tax but not the US filing obligation.
Is it hard to get residency in a no-income-tax country?
It varies. The UAE grants residency through a company or property purchase in weeks. Monaco and the Bahamas expect a substantial bank deposit or property. The Caribbean islands often sell residency or citizenship outright through investment programmes.
