How much is income tax in Monaco?

Monaco has levied no personal income tax on its residents since 1869. Salaries, capital gains, rental income from outside Monaco and investment dividends are all received gross, which is why the Principality is one of the densest concentrations of wealth on earth.

French nationals are the one exception: under the 1963 bilateral agreement, French citizens resident in Monaco still pay French income tax as if they lived in France.

Monaco expat & digital-nomad tax regime

The No personal income tax regime does not lower the rate here, because Monaco already taxes personal income at 0%. What it changes is your right to live and work in the country, not your tax bill.

Do US citizens pay tax in Monaco?

US citizens owe no Monaco income tax, but the US taxes its citizens on worldwide income regardless of residence, so you still file with the IRS (the Foreign Earned Income Exclusion and foreign tax credits rarely help when the local rate is 0%).

The 0% is a Monaco rate. Your home country may still tax you until you break tax residency there, that exit is where an advisor earns their fee.

Capital gains, wealth & property tax

Monaco uses the French VAT system, standard rate 20%.

How to become a tax resident of Monaco

There is no fixed price of entry set in law, but in practice banks require a deposit commonly cited at €500,000+, plus proof of accommodation (owned or rented) and a clean record. Residency is granted via a carte de séjour and expects a genuine home in Monaco.

Not the same as your home country letting you go, most tax bills come from failing to exit the old residence, not from entering Monaco.

Monaco tax treaties

Monaco maintains around 5 double taxation treaties in force. They generally follow the OECD Model Convention and reduce withholding tax on cross-border dividends, interest and royalties, so the same income is not taxed twice when you move, invest or earn across borders. With very few treaties, cross-border income can still face double taxation, so check the specific route before you move.

Monaco income tax FAQ

How much is income tax in Monaco?

0%. Monaco charges no personal income tax on residents (since 1869). The only exception is French nationals, who pay French income tax under the 1963 France–Monaco treaty.

Do you need $500,000 to live in Monaco?

There is no legal price tag, but in practice you must show substantial means. Banks typically ask for a deposit around €500,000, and you need owned or rented accommodation in Monaco to obtain the carte de séjour.

Do US citizens pay tax in Monaco?

No Monaco income tax. But US citizens are taxed by the US on worldwide income wherever they live, so they still file a US return; Monaco's 0% rate means foreign tax credits give little relief.

Does Monaco have capital gains or wealth tax?

No. Monaco has no capital gains tax, no wealth tax and no annual property tax on personal assets. Inheritance tax applies only to Monaco-situated assets, from 0% (direct line) to 16%.
