Smallest countries in the world
Ranked by land area, smallest first.
This ranking orders sovereign states by the smallest land area, using GeoNames data. Vatican City is the smallest of all, followed by Monaco, Nauru, Tuvalu and San Marino, with several tiny island and city-states filling out the list. For a nomad these micro-states are curiosities more than relocation targets, since most have limited housing, high costs or very restrictive residence rules.

Frequently asked questions
What is the smallest country in the world?
Vatican City is the smallest sovereign state, covering about 0.49 square kilometers, an enclave inside Rome. It has a population of only a few hundred. Monaco is the second smallest at roughly 2 square kilometers.
What are the five smallest countries in the world?
The five smallest countries by area are Vatican City, Monaco, Nauru, Tuvalu and San Marino. All are microstates, either city-states in Europe or small Pacific islands. Despite their size, each is a fully recognized sovereign nation.
Is Vatican City a country?
Yes. Vatican City is an independent sovereign state established by the 1929 Lateran Treaty, with its own government, passports and diplomatic relations. It is the headquarters of the Roman Catholic Church and is led by the Pope. Its tiny size does not affect its legal status as a country.
What is the smallest country by population?
Vatican City also has the smallest population, with only around 500 to 800 residents. Among more conventional states, Nauru and Tuvalu have the smallest populations, each with roughly 10,000 to 11,000 people. Small area and small population often, but not always, go together.
