Countries with no dividend tax: frequently asked questions
Which countries do not tax dividends?
The zero-tax havens such as the United Arab Emirates, Monaco, the Cayman Islands and the Bahamas charge nothing, and several territorial systems exempt foreign dividends. A few higher-tax countries also exempt dividends under specific regimes.
How are dividends taxed for expats?
It depends on where you are tax-resident and where the company sits. Many countries tax residents on worldwide dividends, while territorial systems tax only local ones. Treaties can reduce withholding tax at source.
Is it better to take salary or dividends?
For company owners it often depends on the mix of income tax, corporate tax and social security in that country. In a no-dividend-tax jurisdiction, paying yourself in dividends can be far more efficient than salary.
What is withholding tax on dividends?
It is tax the paying company deducts before the dividend reaches you, common on cross-border payments. Tax treaties often cut the rate, and your country of residence may credit it against your own bill.
